About this event
A 100 mile run from Ilkeston to Skegness via Mablethorpe. WTF: The Will Garvey Trust Foundation was set up in 2019 in the aftermath of our son's death by suicide. Will was only 20 when he died. We made mistakes as a family and believe that had we, and Will, had more information, been more aware, the outcome might have been different and we are determined to do all we can to prevent young suicide. Suicide kills more young people than anything else: 1 death by suicide is still too many. It is the vision of WTF to create talking communities everywhere we go so that young people feel safe and supported when talking about how they feel and might struggle with life's challenges. We aim to achieve this with three main projects: 1. Wellbeing Libraries. We supply local schools with all the materials they need to provide students with information about a range of topics that are of interest to them and can offer support and signposting (depression, self harm, eating disorders, relationships, exams, etc). 2. Wellbeing Workshops. We work with local community and sports groups to deliver workshops that promote self care and address the issues that affect young people as they make their way into the adult world. 3. Wellbeing Care Packs. We deliver care packs to young people who are finding life a real challenge at the moment. This might be due to a bereavement, to illness, relationship breakdown and much more. We are blessed with a board of 8 Trustees with another 20 volunteers supporting events that we host (Winter Ball, Willfest, Charity football match, for example) and those we attend (i.e., CAMHS events, Kirk Hallam Community Fair, Wallamstock). We know we can't do the work we do without their fantastic support, experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm, and we really appreciate all that they do. We are well connected. WTF is a member of the National Suicide Prevention Alliance, Zero Suicide Alliance, Erewash Partnership, Erewash Children and Young People's Network, amongst others. Our mentors have year's of experience in mental health and the charity sector, and we are supported by Paul Crawford (Institute of Mental Health), Sir Stephen Moss, (Chief Nurse and Director of Nursing at QMC), Maura Teager (MBE for Services to Nursing). If you would like to get involved, and improve the lives of young people right here where you live, please get in touch. We'd love to meet you. info@willgarveytrustfoundation.org.uk
